Lets face it, we have all experienced the ups and down of life. How is it that some people seem to bounce back like a superhuman, whilst others, myself included seem to go down like a sinking ship!

 

In this article I will be sharing my own journey of how i overcame a 30 year battle with anorexia/ bulimia nervosa, depression and alcohol addiction.

 

NO MATTER WHAT WE ARE GOING THROUGH…. AND NO MATTER HOW HOPELESS IT SEEMS, my story proves that it’s never too late to get on the right path.

TROUBLED MIND

Gosh, looking back, it’s a miracle that i am still alive. From the age of 15 ( excluding 5 years of recovery aged 21-26) up until six months ago, i really gave my body a battering. With months of starvation and living on pure orange juice, daily laxative abuse, self induced vomiting and excessive exercise, i had no thought AT ALL , of the internal damage i was doing both to my body and my mind.

 

With three hospital admissions for anorexia my mind was still absolutely consumed with a mindset that was not serving me well. Yet, i was still on that road of self destruction, self sabotage and escaping reality.

The above photo was taken six months ago and at the time I took this, i had no idea, just how far gone i was in to the most deadly mental illness with the highest mortality rate. This disease struck amazing people and an idol of mine…. Karen Carpenter. WHY WOULD  someone as talented and funny, with a loving family and millions in the bank possibly starve herself to death!

THE SIMPLE ANSWER IS …..HER MIND! 

 

This isn’t an article about eating disorders but how our mind and the thoughts we think, can control how we live and the behaviours we partake.

 

Unfortunately, some who have not received the care they need and the information to turn their lives around will end tragically. This doesn’t mean that death is the only tragedy to a broken mind.

 

WASTING THE PRECIOUS TIME WE DO HAVE, THINKING ABOUT THE PAST OR WORRYING ABOUT THE FUTURE , IS ANOTHER FORM OF DEATH….. THE DEATH OF OUR TRUE SELVES!

HOW I OVERCOME MY MIND

Becoming aware of how I was thinking was the first real step towards becoming a “conscious thinker”. It soon became clear that what i was thinking about all day long, was not talking in a way that was uplifting and positive.

 

By not being aware of these thoughts meant that i was believing them and so was acting upon them in my behaviours towards myself. It was through the basis of knowledge that i even discovered that our thoughts can affect our behaviour but that we can also have control over what we allow in and what we choose to believe or not.

 

Many people suffer from anxiety and depression and are self medicating with many distracting behaviours, such as alcohol, shopping, over eating, but looking outside of the self, i discovered, is only a way of escaping from what is inside.

 

Maybe for you, it’s not about critical thinking that has you on the wrong path with uncomfortable feelings. Maybe that’s all it is, just a feeling that you don’t  like but are not sure where it comes from.

 

We learn a lot of our conditioning during our childhood by family, friends and peers. The subconscious mind stores all of that information which we may have forgotten about. If something unpleasant happened to you, such as bullying or divorce then this can have an impact on our minds, without us even being aware. Or it maybe as simple as not being taught how the mind works. There is no education or focus on the mind within the educational system, so no wonder people fall prey to these issues.

 

HELPING OURSELVES

Like i explained, being aware is the first step and how i began the process of change and healing. Becoming apart of an online community also gave me a lot of support but also knowledge. A lot of entrepreneurs, i discovered, do certain practices throughout their day. As id never experienced entrepreneurship before, this was all very new to me.

 

Alongside the education i was receiving about starting my own business  ( which was the catalyst for my recovery….. being exposed to an alternative and flexible lifestyle and self employment, set a light inside of me, so much so, i began the process of recovering from a 30 year battle …. There was the health and well-being aspect which really sent me full speed into getting myself physically healthy. Take a look below ..

All of these speakers were fundamental in the process of my recovery. They are so passionate about the way we think and the implications of that thought. These four speakers had all the reasons in the world to fall prey to self destruction as they all experienced hardships in their lives but went on to help and motivate others.

 

MEDITATION ~ There are many forms of meditation from an hour’s buddhist monk practice to a ten minute body scan meditation. They great effects of meditation are simply delicious and soothing. The like of mindvalley offer extensive programs from hypnosis to energy healing. I have been using their practices for a few months and it really is important for us all to take time to centre and quiet the mind. So i highly recommend having a go. You tube offer a variety , so check it out.

 

POSITIVE AFFIRMATIONS ~ When we are not used to being aware of the minds, chatterbox, we listen to all of the nonsense in there. It is possible to rewire our minds by repeating positive statement daily, until the subconscious mind starts to take it in as true. The mind can only comprehend the here and now statements, so refrain from using future statements…. such as…. i will be fit and healthy. Say…. i am fit and healthy. 

 

A fun idea, is keeping pictures around your home of positive phrases. The more you look at it, the more you will begin to move away from the not so positive thoughts. It takes work but it works and is a lot less work than beating ourselves up!

 

 

 

ON THE RIGHT PATH

There were several aspects at play, that sent my mind from a distorted and critical mess, to where i am today. First was finding an online community that set fire works of desire off inside. For the first time in my life, i felt like i was connected with like minded people but also, i was excited to learn the digital world and build a business that excites me.

The next was information …. reading was never something i had previously enjoyed but now, i can’t get enough. Learning about business, mindset and all forms of self development. Gone are the days of evenings in front of the tv….. i wasted so many hours watching rubbish!

The nest was the activities and techniques i incorporated in to my daily routine, such as yoga, qi gong, meditation and a gratitude practice.

ALL OF THESE THINGS COMBINED HAVE LITERALLY SAVED MY LIFE FROM DEATH FROM ANOREXIA OR MORE WASTED YEARS OF THE SAME VICIOUS CYCLE…. I’M SO GLAD I’M AN AWAKENED SOUL!
